Less Packaging Waste and More Circular Economy Through the EU Packaging Regulation

In January 2025, the European Union published the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which will take effect directly in all EU member states as of August 12, 2026. The goal is to reduce packaging waste and promote the circular economy.

This goal aligns with our network’s slogan: “Recycle and reuse instead of throwing away.” Depending on the role we and all companies play in the economic process – whether as generators, importers, suppliers, manufacturers, or distributors – different tasks and obligations arise.

In Germany, the Packaging Act Implementation Act (VerpackDG) was published in the Federal Law Gazette No. 207 in July 2026, replacing the Packaging Act that had been in effect until then.
