On January 29, our network met at TU Ilmenau. In addition to reports and discussions on the current state of network activities, the main focus was on friction stir welding. The presentation “Wear in Friction Stir Welding” by M.Sc. Michael Hasieber provided an introduction to the topic. A subsequent practical demonstration of processes and applications sparked in-depth discussions and an active exchange of experiences.
Friction Stir Welding: Advancing Process, Material, and Tooling Research
Although friction stir welding has been known for some time, numerous questions remain regarding processes, materials, and tooling. To ensure sustainable tool usage and longevity, it is essential to identify wear-critical areas through both quantitative and qualitative analysis. Only then can effective strategies for wear reduction and prevention be developed.
In industrial production, tool design tailored to specific joining tasks is a crucial factor, and current research is addressing this challenge. Ongoing projects are investigating various tool concepts and their combinations.
With a growing focus on resource efficiency, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness, topics such as force reduction in friction stir welding, tool scaling, and the joining of materials like aluminum and copper for lightweight construction are becoming increasingly important.
